Description
Groundsmen were important staff from the beginning of the Garden. These were the employees who maintained the grounds. They planted new plants, weeded, watered and maintained irrigation systems, pruned and trimmed plants, checked for and treated diseased plants, and removed plant debris and dead trees. They were typically supervised, but early on they often initiated plantings on their own and sometimes brought their own native plants to install at the Garden.
This volume contains the oral histories of five groundsmen serving from 1945 to 1990: Leon Enlow, Walter C. Douglas, Jose Torres, Adrien Joujon-Roche, and Wayne Larimore. The interviews took place between 1984-1985, and the illustrated transcript was published in 2024.
