Edward Schneider was the director of the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden from 1992 to 2010. He is professor emeritus of the University of Minnesota and the author or co-author of five books and more than 100 articles and book chapters on plant structure.
In the 18 years he served as director, the Garden grew to 78 acres and a membership of more than 3200. His team developed a Vital Mission Plan which won final approval from the County Board of Supervisors in 2010 and would expand workspace and scientific staff. The Plan also laid the groundwork for the development of the 11,500 square foot Pritzlaff Conservation Center including a new herbarium which opened in 2014.
Ed was interviewed by Oral History Program Volunteer Susan Keefe in March 2022, and the illustrated transcript was published in 2023.
